Dental X-ray basics

bitewings, PAs and what they show

X-rays let clinicians see between teeth and under gums where eyes cannot.

The short version

  1. 1Bitewings check for cavities between teeth.
  2. 2Periapical films show the whole tooth tip to crown.
  3. 3Frequency depends on your risk and history, not a fixed rule for everyone.

Bitewings

Small films or sensors that catch the crowns of upper and lower teeth together, useful for finding decay between contacts.

Periapical (PA)

Shows one or a few teeth from crown to root tip, helpful for abscesses or deep problems.

Panoramic

A wide view of jaws and teeth, often used around wisdom teeth or broader planning.

Safety talk

Modern dental doses are low; lead aprons and digital sensors are common. Ask your office any question you have.
